There are few legal cases in history that have such impact as
to change the lives of not one, not two, not three, but many people
across the country. Listed below are some of these cases.
Alabama State Troopers: This Case
doesn't have a specific title. It started out as small civil suit
against the state for discrimination and would span 2 decades
all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
Smith v. YMCA: The Civil Rights Act
passed by Congress was aimed to affect the lives of many blacks
across the south. But in most Southern States, this act wasn't
put into affect. This case shows the committment of SPLC lawyer,
Morris Dees, to uncover the truth and bring equality to the land.
Bobby Person v. Carolina Knights of the
Ku Klux Klan: this case set the precedent not only for North
Carolina but other states as well to limit violent activity and
the acitivities of militias in their state.
Dothard v. Rawlinson: The Center fought
for all rights, not just civil rights. In this case, Ms. Dothard
was denied a job because of her sex. This case too went to the
Supreme Court of the United States of America.
Beulah Mae Donald v. United Klans of America:
In this precedent setting case, the United Klans of America was
bankrupted by the seven million dollar verdict awarded to the
mother of Michael Donald, killed because he was black.
Hate on Trial: The Trial of America's
most dangerous Neo-Nazi. This act of violence shocked the country
and inspired documentaries all around the U.S. The Civil Suit
filed on behalf of the victim's family put the leaders of the
White Aryan Resistance on trial.
