Leyla Zana has advocated for the rights of Kurds in Turkey for the past two decades. Fighting for the rights of women and prisoners in Turkish jails (including her jailed husband) she became a member of the Turkish parliament. She was arrested, charged with treason and inciting division within Turkey, and has remained in prison there since 1994.
