Although these obstacles were hard to overcome, James Meredith still managed to become a student at Old Miss. With the help of President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Barnett finally gave in and allowed James Meredith to register at Ole Miss as a student there. However, during Meredith’s escort onto campus, thousands of federal marshals, border patrols, and prison guards were sent there to protect him from the angry mobs. A mob of over two thousand people gathered on campus and started attacking the guards. Tear gas and other sorts of weapons were used to keep the mob under control long enough for the federal troops to arrive and scatter the mob. As a result of this conflict, two had died and many more were injured.
