We wanted our page to have a medical feel to it, hence the thick margins. However, we lightened those margins with upward-slanting white accents so as to not make it feel too heavy. We used sans-serif fonts to contribute to the modern, clean medical feel.
We liked the purple/black/white color scheme because they are all colors that can represent joy or pain, elation or suffering, life or death. This represents how we were trying to contrast cancer's severity with Dr. Farber's admirable, noble dedication to fighting cancer.
