Paul Ruesesabegina is the true definition of what a humanitarian is genuinely supposed to be. In a world full of genocide, evil and so much violence, people like Ruesesabegina are undoubtedly a reminder of the goodness that still exists in this world. Born on June 15, 1954 at Murama-Gitarama in the Central-South region of Rwanda, Ruesesabegina is the son to simple, farming parents. Growing up he had originally seen himself becoming a priest one day. However in time, after a receiving an education at the Faculty of Theology in Cameroon, his mind would eventually change, as he would make the transition into studying hotel management. Eventually through much work and dedication, he would graduate from Kenya Utalii College in Nairobi. His excellence in the field of Hotel Management led him to become the assistant manager and eventual interim manager and guardian of the Hotel Mille Collines. When genocide broke out after the death of longtime Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana in 1994, Paul would be responsible for saving the lives of over 1,000 Rwandans. Throughout the years he has received several awards and accolades for his actions despite the fact that he considers himself to be an “ordinary man”.
