A German industrialist and member of the Nazi party living in Nanjing, China, during the Japanese invasion of that city in 1937, John Rabe saved hundreds of thousands of refugees in the Nanjing Safety Zone and International Committee that he created. Risking his own life, he saved others from rape, torture, and death.
