James Meredith wanted to integrate into the University of Mississippi (“Ole Miss”). He applied for admission to the University of Mississippi on January 31, 1961 but his admission was later denied because he was not a white man. He wrote letters to the Department of Justice and to the university so that his application for the summer session would be even considered by the education board. As an honorable member of the United States Air Force for nine years (1951-60) and a high school graduate, Meredith is more than qualified to become a university student. However, because of his skin color, he is not able to go to the university of his choice.
