Ross Barnett was a lawyer who used his fortunes gained from his job to become the governor of Mississippi in 1960. As a white supremacist, he clashed with the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and used his powers as governor to further his support for white supremacist causes. In 1962, he actively opposed James Meredith's efforts to desegregate the University of Mississippi, his alma mater.
