Sacramento
Education in any city is never
as thorough as anyone would like it to be. There are many things
that K-12 schools would not offer. From extra curricular activities
to a taste of a real vocation, Matsui has tried his best to spread
and expand education.
Congressional Art Competition
is a local/national event. The Sacramento branch was sponsored by
the late Robert Matsui to encourage the arts and to decorate the
halls of Congress. Winners of this competition receive a trip to
Washington DC to see their work put up in the halls of Congress.
Matsui has also visited elementary
schools to give them a feel of how politics run. Many people have
the same mentality as the children do. If there is a problem, it
should be fixed as soon as possible. The problem with that philosophy
is that there are many other factors that also come into play, like
getting the approval of the various government organizations before
any type of planning may be implemented. Such problems many require
years of preparation and work.
He also provided aid for higher
education. The community colleges in his area received $400,000
from the Federal Government to ensure that the programs are up-to-date
and provide more financial aid for students who truly need it, since
most students do not receive enough to provide for college. He also
worked to encourage more students to consider working in the nursing
program and help non-traditional students pursuit their field of
interest.
