Leymah stays extrememly busy with all of her work, lectures, goodwill, and publicity.
In 2007, Leymah received the Blue Ribbon of Peace from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Soon after, in 2009, along with the two other recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, Leymah received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. After having received the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize along with two other incredible women, Gbowee is now back in Liberia. Following her acceptance of the award, she was welcomed home with many smiling faces and jubilant family members. At her church, President Sirleaf made a surprise appearance to thank Gbowee for everything that she did which led to her election. She appeared in a documentary in 2008, part of the PBS documentary series, “Women, War and Peace.” It was called, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” and it aired in November 2011 on PBS.
Currently, she is working as a social worker in Monrovia. She is mother to six children. She is also the executive director or WIPSEN, which is headquartered in Accra, Ghana. Every year, she comes to Harvard University for a women’s summit led by Swanee Hunt and other women at Harvard. In addition, Leymah works with young girls throughout Africa, trying to provide them with hopeful futures.
