Mikhail Gorbachev led the Soviet Union when he liberalized much of the rule in Soviet-dominated nations in Eastern Europe and permitted the tearing down of the Berlin Wall in 1989, physically and psychologically liberating Eastern Europe. Gorbachev, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, laid the groundwork for the end of the Cold War and the transformation of the Soviet Union into present-day Russia.
